Progress is underway in the Grand Loom Works project area! On Monday, August 18th the Worcester Loomworks residences at 93 Grand Street broke ground. The Community Builders (TCB), a non-profit community housing developer, has begun work to convert the vacant 1.7 acre Crompton Knowles mill building site into 94 units of affordable housing.
The project will be developed in two phases: an initial phase of 39 one, two and three-bedroom units and a later phase of 32 one and two-bedroom units. A portion of the units in both phases will include housing for special needs households.
Congressman Jim McGovern, Undersecretary Aaron Gornstein of the Mass Department of Housing & Community Development, City Manager Ed Augustus, Dwayne Marsh, the Senior Advisor for national HUD Office of Economic Resilience were on hand for the ceremonial breaking ground. Bart Mitchell, head of TCB, Tom Gleason of MassHousing, Roger Herzog of the Community Economic Development Assistance Corporation (CEDAC) participated, as well. Kristine Foye, the Acting Regional Administration for HUD Region 1 also attended.
The Worcester Loomworks housing project is a part of the Grand Loom Works Sustainable Communities Challenge Grant program, funded by the US Department of Housing and Community Development (HUD). The Worcester Loomworks also received funding through the HUD Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP). Additionally, Worcester Loomworks received loan assistance from MassDevelopment, a grant from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, administered by MassHousing for the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), and financing assistance from the City of Worcester and the CEDAC.
